Most of our designs come from seeing a problem and thinking “I can make that better”, and the shuttles in our Tweed Kit and wool packs are no exception. After watching Maeve wind up individual colours onto a wooden shuttle, Aran thought exactly that. Our goal with the Rocket Loom and our Irish Tweed kit was to make weaving accessible, and anything we could do to take the repetition out of the process had to be a good thing! The first idea was to build a contraption to wind a single shuttle, using plywood gears and bits of dowel greased with olive oil! From this came the idea of winding multiple shuttles at once, which further developed into a recyclable card from which the shuttles could be snapped off. After multiple prototypes, upgraded winders and plenty of weaving, we settled on our current design. It made starting a weaving project so simple we have applied for a patent to protect the snap-off shuttle idea!
Simply pick your colour, snap it off (with a satisfying crack!), and get started. Our wool packs contain enough wool to make three different weavings, and we include 2 hand illustrated patterns for each set of colours and a blank template so you can design your own unique piece of Irish Tweed!
